I have been debating with myself about writing this and then tried to find anyplace that was holding a forum on the environment and came up empty. So here I am on my own blog site to see if this is of interest to the powers that be.
I was watching T.V. the other week on one of the discovery channels and they had a group of environmentalist and earth scientist talking about finding sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere and accusing the government of using planes to discharge it in the jet exhaust. Now they tested the fuel and the exhaust and could not find the source of the sulfur dioxide so it must be some secret covert operation, RIGHT?
Well folks you got one thing right but you are thirty years too late to stop it. Yes the government was responsible, more to the point the E.P.A. was responsible for the sulfur dioxide that is now finding its way into the upper atmosphere however it did not come from any plane it came from the catalytic converters on all cars starting in the very late sixties.
Here comes some history. In the late sixties and early seventies the E.P.A. mandated that all U.S. vehicles had to be equipped with catalytic converters in order to reduce pollution. These early converters all produced sulfur dioxide until they warmed up to operating temperature. Then in the eighties converters were introduced that for some reason one in five produced the initial sulfur dioxide. In the nineties that number went to one in twenty. In 2002 it was one in 100 and sulfur dioxide production was for the first time a reason to replace a converter. Does anyone see a trend here. If the government was trying to slow down global warming by releasing sulfur dioxide into the air and reflect the suns energy back into space then they came up with and started that plan thirty years ago and it has been completed now. The sulfur dioxide that has been released is finally reaching the upper atmosphere in measurable amounts just like it took FREON R-12 thirty years to finally make it up there.
If I am correct in my assumption then all that you environmentalist can do now is hope to God that they got the projected amounts correct or its going to either get very cold in odd places or very hot everywhere.
Sulfur Dioxide is a very stable gas that's why a car that released it could be smelled for a very long time. It disperses but it does not go away. Just like R-12. Just something to make you think.....
Sorry for any nightmares though...
